Section IX - Adult Miscellaneous

Literacy Materials/Easy Readers

General Comments

The Adult Easy Reader collection consists of both fiction and nonfiction titles. The books in this collection are intended to promote appreciation of reading and use of the library to adult and young adult new readers who have had little exposure to reading or libraries. This collection is also intended to be a resource center for adult literacy tutors to acquire leisure reading materials for their students. Titles selected are intended for leisure reading and improving reading skills and are not intended to instruct new readers in reading skills.

Development Plan

The primary goal of this collection is to provide high-interest, low-level reading materials to adults and young adults. In order to meet this goal, the Library:

  • strives to provide a broad range of materials to meet the varied likes and tastes of patrons.
  • purchases mainly fiction leisure reading materials and a few nonfiction titles.
  • purchases a broad range of reading levels to meet the varied reading levels of adult and young adult new readers.
  • evaluates patron requests and adds to the collection as warranted.
  • purchases duplicate copies when popularity of the title warrants.

Influencing Factors

Purchases and buying patterns are determined in large part by:

  • availability of sources in literacy catalogs.
  • availability of paperback versions.
  • shelf space.
  • budget constraints.

Retention/Weeding

  • Books in poor, unreadable condition are weeded.
