Telephone/Zip Code Directories

Revised January 2003

General Comments

Telephone directories facilitate community access to telephone listings for selected cities in the U.S. This saves patrons the expense of directory assistance charges, often providing better service than is available from directory assistance (e.g., the subject access of the yellow pages listings, the ability to browse a particular surname). Zip code directories allow patrons quick access to current zip codes throughout the U.S.

Development Plan

This collection provides a paper copy of the most frequently requested regional directories received free of charge through the phone company. In addition, automated sources are purchased.

The paper copy directories are both white and yellow pages and include all Wyoming directories as well as directories for major regional cities, including Denver, Rapid City, Billings, and Las Vegas. Other major cities may be added as demand warrants. A criss-cross directory for Campbell County is kept at the reference desk.

Paper directories issued by other than the major telecommunications provider for the area are not developed.

A zip code directory, received from the Government Printing Office, offers U.S. zip code information.

In addition, Internet sources are offered to access such information.

Influencing Factors

Purchases and buying patterns are determined in large part by:

  • electronic/Internet sources availability.
  • patron requests.
  • present and potential relevance to the community.
  • availability of free directories.

Retention/Weeding

  • Gillette paper telephone directories are retained, then moved to storage.
  • All other paper editions are discarded as new editions are received.
