This is a wide-ranging collection that reflects many general subjects.
Information on mysteries of the world, library science, Internet,
books of fact and trivia, news media, and journalism and publishing
This collection seeks to offer introductory information for preschool
through sixth grade readers. Some areas are totally out of scope
for development and are not included in this collection because
they do not present information at levels that are of interest to
children. For example, children use computers, but are not interested
in reading about the programs or doing any programming.
For the preschool through sixth grade reader, the presentation
of information should include clear and colorful illustrations,
highlighted vocabulary, concise glossary, and an index (that may
or may not be present). Purchases and buying patterns are also determined
in large part by:
- reading level.
- new works.
- budget constraints.
- circulation statistics.
- patron requests.
- shelf space.
- Titles in this collection are generally very basic and do not
date as quickly as more in-depth materials.
- Titles with child appeal that continue to be used are considered
- Physically worn materials are replaced or updated.
- Books are withdrawn due to damage, loss, general interest level
as evidenced by circulation figures, or content relevancy and
